Fact or Fiction: Can Infrared Saunas Really Help You Lose Weight?

Can you really sweat yourself thin?

It sounds too good to be true…can you actually sweat out fat? We’re about to lay out the fact and clarify the claims for you!

Saunas in general, infrared or traditional, increase your core temperature, thus raising your heart rate from the body working to cool itself. A 2017 European Journal of Preventive Cardiology study found that participants’ heart rates were elevated for up to 30 minutes following a sauna session – not unlike what you experience after a moderate-intensity cardio exercise such as jogging.

Using an infrared sauna increases heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate, and can burn up to 1,500 calories in a 55 minute session. This conditions your cardiovascular system, which can provide many of the same benefits of regular exercise.

It can also help you recover after an exercise session. Researchers found in a study that the infrared light waves in the infrared saunas improve muscle recovery after exercise.

So, what are the facts?

Another study out of Binghamton University in New York exposed people to an infrared sauna three times per week for 45 minutes. After four months, those who used the sauna had up to a 4% drop in body fat compared to the control group whose body fat did not change.

In a 2009 study, infrared saunas were shown to help lower weight and decrease waist size in a 3-month period.  Many users also report that infrared saunas help them feel more relaxed, which stress has a huge role in weight gain and weight loss.
